Dr. S. Ramalingam (M.A (Psychology), M.A (Sociology), M.Sc (Physics), M.Ed (Special Education), LLB,ML (Criminal Law), M.SC yoga & Human Excellence, B.Ed (Physical Science & Mathematics), Sr.DS.Ed, TSLD), Founder & Honorary Director of Maruti Seva Former Member of the Tamil Nadu State Child Rights Protection Commission, Government of Tamil Nadu, and former Member of the Child Welfare Committee, Department of Child Welfare & Special Service (Chennai, Krishnagiri & Dharmapuri Districts), was born on July 27, 1967 in Dharmapuri District, Tamil Nadu.
He has over 35 years of experience in the field of Special Education Intellectual & Learning Disability/Difficulties and child education. He received his Master’s Degrees in Psychology and Sociology from Annamalai University. He completed his B.Sc in Physics from Government Arts College, Dharmapuri, and B.Ed (Physical Science & Mathematics) from Government College of Education, Namakkal District.
He served as a primary school teacher from 1989–1990. Later, he completed his Senior Diploma in Special Education from Balavihar Training School, Chennai. He joined Ashraya Centre for Special Education as a Special Educator and worked there until January 30, 1999.
He completed a course in Tutor Training for Specific Learning Difficulties at Alpha to Omega Learning Centre in 1995. He started Maruti Seva Centre for Special Education on January 31, 1999, at Kolathur, Chennai, with the mission to serve children with Autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, Slow Learners, Learning Disabilities. The school began with three children and has now grown into a large institution serving thousands of special children.
He served as a Child Welfare Committee Member under the Juvenile Justice Act 2000 for Chennai, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri Districts from 2003–2011, supporting the upliftment of orphaned children and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. He is associated with National Institute for Empowerment with Multiple Disabilities(NIEPMD),national institute for empowerment of persons with intellectual disabilities(NIEPID), Rehabilitation Council of India(RCI), and various governmental and non-governmental organizations.
He designs specialized curricula, teaching strategies, and learning materials for school children. He creates awareness among the public by organizing seminars and workshops on learning difficulties and the importance of Remedial education. He also provides guidance and counseling for slow learners and children with learning difficulties.
Dr. S. Ramalingam was honored by Her Excellency, the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, with the National Award for Child Welfare (2009) on November 14, 2010, for his dedicated work in establishing Maruti Seva Centre as a role model Special School in India.
