In 1989–90, I completed my B.Ed. at the Government College of Education in Kumarapalayam, embarking on a fulfilling journey as a Science and Mathematics teacher in a private school in Dharmapuri district. My passion for education led me to seize an opportunity in 1992 to join the Senior Diploma Course in Special Education at Balvihar Training School, Chennai. Armed with new insights, I embraced the role of a Special Educator at Ashraya Centre for Special Education, Egmore, Chennai, from 1993 to 1999.
During this period, I not only contributed to the education of special children but also broadened my impact as an external examiner for the Diploma course in Special Education across Kerala, Andhra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. My responsibilities extended to being an Empanelled Officer, inspecting and recommending grants-in-aid from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, for various Non-Government Organizations and special schools.
Witnessing the challenges faced by special children during my visits to different schools and organizations, I recognized a pressing need for well-trained teachers. Many schools focused solely on basic needs, neglecting cognitive, social, and emotional development. This realization fueled my commitment to making a difference in the field of Special Education.
In 2017, I took on the role as a member of the Tamil Nadu Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TNCPCR), where I continued advocating for children’s education, welfare, protection, rehabilitation, and reintegration.
From 2004 to 2012, I served as a Child Welfare Committee member in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Chennai districts, engaging with various types of children and contributing to their well-being.
My journey took a significant turn in 1999 when I responded to the need for specialized education by founding the Maruti Seva School for Special Education in Kambar Nagar. Guided by the vision of holistic development, the school aimed to cater to children with Intellectual Disabilities, Autism, Slow Learning abilities, and Learning Disabilities.
Over the years, Maruti Seva has evolved into a beacon of hope, providing education to more than 10,000 children. Recognizing the lack of awareness around Intellectual Disabilities, Developmental Disabilities, Learning Difficulties, and Slow Learners, the school has been instrumental in addressing these issues.
We have integrated modern technology and equipment to support children with learning difficulties and slow learners effectively.
As a resource person for various institutions and a member of the Board of Studies in the Department of Special Education Rehabilitation at Tamil Nadu Open University, I’ve continued to stay engaged with the evolving landscape of special education.
The school’s curriculum at Maruti Seva School is designed with meticulous consideration of each child’s intellectual capacity, opportunities, resources, and environmental background. We emphasize early intervention, proper diagnosis, and a personalized approach to address the unique needs of every child.
The school aims at identifying the difficulties / disability as early as possible. We focus on all round development of Intellectually Disabled to build their self confidence, self reliability and self sufficiency. We endeavor to make all our students to become independent and productive members of the society.
Maruti Seva School has received recognition, including the National Award for Child Welfare in 2009, presented by the Honorable President Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil. The school’s commitment extends beyond academics, incorporating therapies such as Speech & Communication Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Yoga Therapy, Play Therapy, Brain Gym, Thirukkural Exercise, and sports and games into the curriculum.
The important aspect of our school is its Periodical Evaluation which is done to assess and achieve the curriculum developed for the prescribed period. It is because of this we can reach the achievement and do proper rectification. It is only evaluation which can measure the achievements. Remedial Education is conducted after the school hours to assist the Slow Learners and children with Learning Disabilities: Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia. Speech and Cognitive Therapy forms important aspects in Remedial Education. This Remedial Education is advantageous to the children among 3 to 18 years including College students. This supportive education is very beneficial for children studying in main stream schools.
Maruti Seva’s vision is dedicated to enabling children with specific needs to achieve their best. Maruti Seva Centre for Special Education is one of the best schools in India for children.
