Maruti Seva’s vision is dedicated in enabling children with specific needs to achieve their best. Maruti Seva School for Special Education is one among the best schools in India for the children with Intellectual Disabilities (Autism, Down’s Syndrome, Dyslexia, 2. Dyscalculia,3. Dysgraphia, Educationally socially Backward Children, Slow Learners and Learning Disabilities). We are a leader in Rehabilitation, Habilitation Special Education and child education and in the delivery of integrated child development services. We believe in uniqueness of all children and the power of families. We also believe in interdisciplinary team approach towards overall development of the child. We believe in creativity, innovation and in challenging barriers. In partnership with parents, we develop and implement innovative programs and services to enhance the quality of life for children and their families. Children with Learning Difficulties are often typecast. In school, they may struggle to focus, seem unwilling to learn and unable to keep up with their grade level. However, such challenges often impact children in other ways; leaving them socially alienated, unable to maintain healthy relationships and suffering from low self-esteem and sometimes dropped out from school.
Without the right support, these children will continue to feel self-conscious, sad, angry, and helpless. And without specialist intervention, these children will be taught to accept that way of life; they will be taught not to aspire. Founded in 1999, we have over 27 years of experience of working with children with Differently Abled Children / Special Needs. We use several educational therapy techniques and learning strategies to motivate children to learn, to think deeply and critically, and expect more of themselves. By building and strengthening fundamental cognitive skills, we positively impact children to be intellectually independent and to live life in the long run. Our team is committed to providing direct, individualized, and high-quality services to children with special needs.
We dedicate ourselves to the cause and provide services in all the related areas focusing on the children with Intellectual Disabilities/Difficulties. Since Learning Disability/Difficulty is a hidden disability which does not allow the child to perform to his/her actual is a potential, the under achievement of an otherwise intelligent child is puzzling to both teachers and parents alike. Timely identification Intervention and appropriate help will ensure that these children continue in the mainstream of education and their potential is fully tapped.
In today’s modern era, education is child-centered. A teacher who does not know the nature, intelligence, developmental stages environments, physical development, social development, mental development, cognition and needs of children cannot do his teaching job effectively. When a normal child is taught wrongly, the society loses that child, says J.F. Kennedy. Special children such as intellectual disability, intellectually Disabled Autism, Down’s Syndrome, slow learners, children with learning problems and severe learning disabilities are not given opportunities to study in the same school as other normal children until the end. The reason for this is the lack of appropriate curriculum, learning and teaching equipment suitable for special children, modern teaching methods, teachers who are not qualified in special education, and harmonious conditions.
Such children suffer day by day like worms in the fire from the school administration, unqualified teachers and parents.
The lock can be opened only if the key is inserted correctly into the hole of the lock and the procedure is followed. If it is operated mechanically and improperly, it will not be possible to open it, and energy and time will be wasted. Similarly, if a curriculum, learning and teaching equipment, teaching methods, and suitable conditions are set up for special children and taught in a proper manner, the child’s knowledge can be increased. Suitable desired behaviour can also be created. It is in this context that special education should be excellent and with a good intention that even the impossible can be achieved if you try, Maruti Seva Special Education School was started on 31-1-1999 with 3 special children in Kambar Nagar, Kolathur, North Chennai by Dr. S. Ramalingam, who holds a degree in Education and Special Education, and his wife Mrs. Visalakshi Ramalingam.
With the wise guidance of Dr. S. Ramalingam and his wife Mrs. Visalakshi Ramalingam, with their excellent advice and excellent services, the institution has been providing Special Education, Speech Training, Behavioral Correction, Corrective Education, Problem-Solving Education, Practical Therapy and Other Treatments to more than 10 thousand children with Intellectual Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Autism, Down Syndrome, Slow Learners, learning Disabilities and Other Learning Problems, so that these children can prosper and live with recognition in the society. Moreover, more than a hundred former students of this school have pursued higher studies. They are pursuing degrees in colleges. Many are working in private and government sector organizations and providing income to their families. Many are getting married and living with children, which is a matter of pride for all of us. A few are self-employed. And they provide employment to others.
It is definitely not possible to say that if you teach one child the same method as another child, you will get success. Children with the same level of intelligence, knowledge, ignorance, behaviors and other skills cannot be the same at every stage. The profession of a special teacher is very challenging. If desirable behavior is to be developed in children, learning must take place.
Learning depends on mental maturity. At the same time, mental maturity depends on learning.
Therefore, learning must take place in children; but the activities to be taught must be transformed into skills and made like a pleasant game. In today’s fast-paced world, industrialization, urbanization, economic changes, and the positions of families have changed. In cities, children are isolated and neglected. This is more common in special children.
In recognition of the excellent services of Maruti Seva Special Education School, which provides happiness and redresses this situation, the National Award for Child Welfare for the year 2009 was presented to Dr. S. Ramalingam by the Hon’ble President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patel, on the occasion of National Children’s Day on 14-11-2010. As Maruti Seva School for Special Education School celebrates its Silver Jubilee, the institution takes pride in recalling the National Award for Child Welfare 15 years ago for its many outstanding services and achievements for the welfare of children as a whole.
Just as food is important to a person, play plays an important role in a child's life. Play is the basis, source and precursor for a child to acquire learning skills. Some people have defined a game as a game that is desired, a game that brings pleasure, and a game that is played according to rules, as mentioned by its author Dr. T.I.R. Nanjundan on page 8 of the book Games in the Epics. Furthermore, a game begins with a feeling of joy, occurs with a feeling of joy, and ends with a feeling of joy. The primary pleasure of a game is to produce pleasure alone. It is not an exaggeration to say that games create many learning events. “Games are an excellent teaching tool in the toolbox of well-trained and skilled teachers,” said a scholar. Generally, games help develop children’s diverse skills. Children gain physical strength through games that use their energy. Children gain thinking skills through games that use their imagination or brain. When children are involved in games with interest, their attention span increases. Also, their ability to communicate with others and social interaction increases. Games Learning occurs through play and builds children's self-confidence. It also serves as a solution to emotional issues in children. Children need to play. And they should be encouraged to play. It should not be mistaken that if children's attention goes to play, they will be distracted from studies. Games form the foundation for children's physical and mental development. Through play, children accept their peers, share things, experiences and happiness with them, give up for others. Be careful to avoid danger and failure. They focus on various things such as thinking independently. Games help children develop social skills and help improve social relationships.
Parents... This is a very important time to create a turning point in the lives of your children. In this case, it is important to note that only if you are vigilant can you make your children independent, achievers, or good citizens. Enrolling children in special schools is a matter that requires careful research. This is the time when every parent should act like a researcher. The reason is that there is a misconception and approach about special schools among the public. Some parents do not consider the intellectual capacity of their child, do not think about anything, and do not ask appropriate experts. There are parents who, on the basis of wrong advice, donate a lot to some ordinary school and later regret that their child is not given the appropriate education.
There is no point in regretting after a mistake has been made or done unknowingly. It is the duty of every parent to think about this in advance.
Children are at an age of incomprehensibility and immaturity, that is why parents should be their guides. Should we measure a child's knowledge based on the marks they get in exams?
Not everyone knows everything. There is no need for that. Therefore, real information about children with intellectual disabilities and learning disabilities. It is very important to seek advice from at least two or three people who have achieved success in this field.
It is best for parents to approach and seek advice from those who are skilled in many fields or have achieved success in the necessary fields without hesitation or shyness. At the same time, it is better for the parents alone to make the final decision.
In any case, the awareness that children should be educated can now be said to be increasing among many parents. It has come.
There is no one in this world better than mothers and fathers to know or assess the shortcomings, development and learning problems of their children. Therefore, it is only by gradually examining the physical, mental and social development, progress and problems of children at the right time that it is possible to know about the disabilities and deficiencies that occur at birth.
Remedial Education or Clinical Teaching is a method of teaching children with learning disabilities in a way that they can understand easily and learn the subject matter with enthusiasm, by properly planning, evaluating by a specially trained special educator or trainer, using innovative learning and teaching techniques, creating an appropriate environment according to child psychology, and bringing out the hidden skills of children within a specified period of time.
Generally, children are always doing something. When Parents or Teachers encourage and cooperate with them while doing good deeds, they will be fully involved in that act and will succeed. We should psychologically examine why children give false reasons to their parents or teachers. A child will give false reasons to hide a mistake they have made or to avoid being punished for a wrong act they are about to do. If we force children to learn a task and teach them studies in an authoritative tone or when we interact with them rudely, we are blocking the very interest of these children in learning. Or we are artificially blocking the natural intellectual development of children.
Young children should be taught only through games because the idea of studying or learning is a game should be formed in their minds. If children feel at a young age that studying is difficult and complicated, the desire to study may not develop. On the contrary, mischief may also lead to unwanted activities.
Some parents bring their children to their homes with individual experts such as teachers, yoga teachers, singing teachers, special teachers, speech therapists, and physical education teachers, and they are upset that they do not get the expected results even after dedicating time to special training. This is true. Man is a social animal that can live together. If a child or a person is isolated, it is considered a punishment. Some parents believe that their children's knowledge grows only through school subjects. This is a misconception. Knowledge does not grow only through the subjects they learn. Educators say that two-thirds of a child's learning occurs outside the classroom. Therefore, every day is a day of learning for children. Home specials such as festivals, weddings. Housewarmings, birthdays and earring ceremonies, tragic events such as deaths and accidents. Public festivals such as temple festivals, school anniversaries, entertainment, recreational programs and even school holidays provide new opportunities for children to explore many things necessary for life. For some children, skills such as Time concept, number concept, reading, writing, and spelling may not develop according to their age. These children cannot understand special attention and remedial education that uses special methods and teaches them in the same way as other students in the class. Concrete materials should be used and individualized educational instruction should be provided. This deficiency can be overcome by appointing a special teacher in the evening and giving them a tutor.
When the special teacher is teaching the subject matter systematically considering the child's intellectual development, the learning process is affected when the parents at home or the teachers in the class switch to a different syllabus or the next subject. The level and rate of learning of the subject matter varies and the children fail in learning. This leads to depression and loss of self-confidence.
In the end, the parents also become discouraged and bored. That is, if the parents also teach the same exercises as the special teacher, the results will be achieved soon. If there is any doubt about the teaching method, parents should consult a qualified specialist teacher. Doubts can be dispelled. It is also very important for parents, class teachers, other subject teachers and special teachers to work together. It is also beneficial to get the help of a psychologist and psychiatrist to get a clear understanding of the child. Many people ask whether excelling in studies or learning depends on their intellectual ability. This is absolutely true. At the same time, no one can deny that children can develop their knowledge using the knowledge they have.
"There is no such thing as a creator, there will be development as long as there is life." says Martha Eck.
No one is born intelligent or talented, but rather they are made. Scientist Thomas Alva Edison has said that success in an activity is one part natural intelligence and ninety-nine parts hard work. The way for students to learn is to study. This path is rough and difficult. Without hard work, there is no study. There is no success. Students have many kinds of abilities hidden within them. This should be developed jointly by parents and teachers.
Learning disabilities in children cannot be cured by medication. Activities like swimming and cycling that can only be learned through training cannot be learned by taking medication. Just as a swimming coach is needed to teach swimming, an experienced specialist coach is also needed to cure circulatory disorders. Learning disabilities in children can only be remedied through individual or special training. The activities learned and the time taken for this will vary depending on the intelligence quotient (IQ) of the child. Just like the individual differences found in normal children, individual differences are very common in children with learning disabilities. It is very difficult to separate children with learning disabilities into a group and provide special training. The reason is that the learning mindset and needs of each child vary. The curriculum also differs. Therefore, the learning of children with intellectual disabilities can be remedied only through Remedial Education or Individual Education Plan.
A child can do his daily tasks on his own without much help from his parents, for example, brushing his teeth in the morning, removing waste, and keeping his body clean. Eating the food provided without thinking. Letting others know what he wants, understanding the orders or messages given by others and behaving accordingly, knowing how to behave or interact with his peers, Teachers, adults, relatives, friends, the public, and living beings around him, and having the ability to behave according to situations. He is ready to learn cognitive activities such as arithmetic, writing, and speaking through play and will ask the teacher, "I have come to this school to learn. Teach me!" The child's undesirable behaviors that hinder learning will gradually decrease. This is the time when children start interacting with other children, treating school as a playground. Therefore, it is better for parents not to spoil their child's happy childhood by thinking that they should learn too much or not at an age that is not appropriate for their age. The child's future will become prosperous later in life.
